Alberta Environment Standards for Used Oil Tanks
Recycling operates as a continuous circuit. As it pertains to oil, all of the links in the recycling chain are in operation at all times – from consumption, to storage, to collection, to re-refinement, and then to consumption again – it’s all happening all at once. But it doesn’t transpire spontaneously. Recycling and conservation requires the effort of thousands of dedicated scientists, engineers, machinists, operators and those involved in dozens more occupations to make it all come together.
Little Dipper is proud to make up a good chunk of that chain by providing storage, retrieval and transportation services for waste oil throughout Alberta and into Saskatchewan. We work with all of the above professions to help reduce the environmental impact of fossil fuels, and we will not fail to meet industry and government standards in everything we do.
And Alberta and Saskatchewan have some of the strictest rules on the planet when it comes to used oil storage! To assist your business in being as productive as possible while you continue to keep an eye on the environment, we also provide legislation-approved used oil tank rentals for safe storage in between visits.
Alberta Environment’s Standards for Used Oil Storage Tanks
Tanks can be subject to abuse from weather and humans, and not all are what they once were. According to the Government of Alberta’s Department of Sustainable Resources & Development, “Up to one third of underground petroleum storage tanks installed prior to the 1990s are leaking or will do so before they are removed.”
A leaky tank can leave you subject to heavy fines and clean-up fees. Petroleum storage tanks are regulated by Alberta Environment, which has operated a tank management program since 1989. If your tank is older, and you suspect it may be damaged, the Petroleum Tank Management Association of Alberta offers training and seminars on the safe removal and disposal of underground storage tank systems. Underground used oil tanks MUST be registered with the Petroleum Tank Management Association of Alberta, as well as those aboveground with a capacity of 2,500 liters or more.
Industries that have heavy machinery and equipment use a large amount of lubricating oil and other materials (such as gas and diesel) daily that are potentially harmful to the environment. Once oil is used, and before gas is burned away, there needs to be a safe and secure place to hold these materials.
